Our next Ten Week Beginners Course runs from September 2008
The Abingdon Fencing Club's Beginners course is an ideal way to start Fencing. The ten week course will involve a mixture of instruction and sparring during each session. The course aim is to introduce the fundamentals of fencing technique to the novice, this will include footwork, blades skills such as parries, disengagement, cutover and compound attacks. The course look primarily at the Foil, but time will be spent looking at the Epee and Sabre to fully introduce the novice into the discipline of fencing. By the end of the course the beginner will have a good solid foundation in the art of fencing and will be able to decide which weapon to pursue.
The course provides the equipment needed, coaching from one of our two coaches, insurance, a first aider, and a club within which the beginner may test their skills. This is the best way to start Fencing.
The course session starts at 8.30 p.m. when you will be issued with the necessary equipment, this will be followed with a warm up and footwork session followed by teaching until 9:30-9:45 p.m. After the taught session is completed you are welcome to stay on and practice what you have been taught in the class or to just watch the more experienced fencers.
You will need to wear a t-shirt, tracksuit trousers and trainers with non-marking soles. Long trousers must be worn, shorts are not appropriate for fencing. For safety reasons, tracksuits worn for fencing must not have open pockets (pockets that zip up or have been sewn closed are fine). The other equipment you need can be borrowed from the club.
Cost : £100 for ten weeks. This cost covers the coaching, use of the club kit and the cost of the most basic membership of British Fencing. The membership of British Fencing provides insurance for any fencing you do while at Abingdon Fencing Club for one calendar year.
Our next Ten Week Intermediates Course runs from 17th April 2008
The Abingdon Fencing Clubs Intermediates course is designed to build on the knowledge and skills gained in the beginners course.
As with the beginners course the cost includes the equipment needed and coaching and will be run by one of our two coaches. The session starts at 8.30 p.m. with a similar warm up and footwork session to the beginners course, followed by teaching until 9:30-9:45 p.m.
Cost: £90 for ten weeks if you are a member of British Fencing, otherwise the £10 cost of membership must be added. Anyone who has become a full member of Abingdon Fencing Club will only pay £40.
The six week weapon group courses are intended to extend the skills of existing fencers. Our club coaches will set the program for the course depending on the mix of abilities in the group. Fencers taking part in one of the weapon coaching groups should have completed the beginners course and, ideally, the intermediate course (especially for the sabre and epee groups, since the beginners course concentrates on foil fencing).
Our two coaches are available for lessons during the second half of the adult fencing session.
Cost: these lessons are offered as a private arrangement with the coaches. Expect to pay around £10 for a 20 minute lesson.
