29 June 2008 - White Horse Team Trophy

This Sunday saw another closely fought White Horse Team Trophy. The first semi-final saw Wrekin A pushing last years champions Abingdon B hard. A 15-9 second leg, Epee, victory for Wrekin closed Abingdon's early lead. The match remained on a knife edge as the foilists exchanged blows point for point in a tense final bout. Abingdon B finally winning 30-29. ULU (University of London Union) took an easier victory over Stourbridge's 'Scarlet and the Pimpernels' in the second semi-final, beating them 30-15. A notable performance by the ULU foilist overwhelmed the Scarlet's leaving them too much ground to recover in the final leg.

The final saw an Abingdon team determined to win press the ULU team hard. A strong second leg, Sabre, saw Abingdon B close ULU's early lead to a single point. The final bout, Epee, matched two fencers equally determined to finish on top. No words could truely describe the ferocity and passion contained in the final six minutes of fighting, however it was ULU who were able to creep ahead to win 30-26.

The full Abingdon Teams were:

Abingdon C went out in a good spirited first round match to Oxford C, 30-14. Abingdon A fared no better. Oxford's B team established an early lead. An exhausing final Sabre bout narrowed the gap to bring a victory back in sight. It was all too little, too late as Oxford B were able to edge through 30-27.

Strong performances from all the teams gave rise to a fun days fencing for all. A big thanks to everyone who took part: Oxford, Saxon (Huscarles), NVA, Wrekin, Stourbridge (Scarlet and the Pimpernels) and ULU for making it such an enjoyable day.

Full competition results and photos are available.

27 April 2008 - Crystal Open

A great result in the West Midlands for a team of Abingdon Fencers. Nick K (Epee), Martin (Foil) and Nick B (Sabre) fought through a pool of sixteen teams to be seeded 6th in the DE. A determined effort saw the fencers finish 11th in the Epee, 9th in the Foil and 5th in the Sabre individual ranking.
Strong performances by all three fencers saw an easy victory in the first round match against York Uni A. The quarter final drew Abingdon against the 3rd seeded Nottingham City club. A close Epee first leg (10-9) slipped away as Nick B and Martin were beaten by fencers who had convincingly beaten them in the pools. Notts City's glory was short lived as they met their match with the eventual winners, Birmingham University, in the semi-final.

19 April 2008 - Karting Chaos in Oxford

1 July 2007 - White Horse Team Trophy

The 4th White Horse Team Trophy was bigger and brighter than previous years with sixteen teams entering from all three previous winners: Stourbridge, Wrekin and Abingdon and some new clubs Oxford University, Saxon and the Veterans. A long days fencing left everyone tired as Abingdon B retained the trophy in closely fought final, winning 15-14 on time.
Abingdon B proved to be a team of worthy winners. All three fencers won their respective individual weapon poules before fighting hard to get past Wrekin of Quality in a tight semi-final, winning 30-26. Congratulations also to Wrekin Havoc who battled past a determined Stourbridge A to win their semi-final 28-24.
